Training and support of a department on implementation of ISO 26262

About the Project
Between 2018 and 2023, Carabiner supported an R&D department with 500+ employees at Volvo Cars, contributing to building up and maintaining the much-needed Functional Safety competency. At the time, the actual department was facing a shortage of experienced personnel and a high turnover in key roles, creating a need to quickly build capacity and reinforce critical know how. Volvo sought a partner who could not only support the development but also guide and train internal teams in application of ISO 26262. Carabiner was brought in to provide development support, training, analysis, and much more.
Carabiner’s Contribution
At its peak, the project involved eight Carabiner engineers working across various functional safety related roles within the department. The team contributed to the functional safety compliance for a new electrical architecture. Our responsibility included providing tailored training, technical guidance in application of the ISO 26262, safety management, development of safety work products as well as conducting internal reviews. In addition, the team also supported in-house software teams with software process development and software safety deliverables.
Confirmation review of Safety work products for an Electrical Vehicle
About the Project
In September 2025 to April 2026 Carabiner reviewed of the main part of the safety documentation for Polestar 5.
As required by the ISO 26262 standard at least all ASIL C and ASIL D safety work products shall undergo confirmation reviews to provide sufficient and convincing evidence for the achieved safety of a vehicle. Carabiner was selected by Polestar as independent experts to conduct the required reviews.
Carabiner’s Contribution
The Carabiner team consisted of 7 experienced functional safety engineers. The covered functional areas included Electrical drive (DC/DC, inverters, propulsion control), AD/ADAS, passive safety, propulsion control, Deceleration, High voltage/low voltage energy supply, steering and stability functions. Where possible the review comments were accompanied by suggestions for corrective actions and improvements of the reviewed documents. The tight deadline of the whole project and the complexity of a major part of the documents made the reviews and handling of the comments even more challenging.
Developed and implement safety processes to scale up the transport as a service for Volvo AB

About the project
This initiative focused on ensuring the safety of Volvo Group’s end-to-end Transportation-as-a-Service (TaaS) solution. The team was responsible for safeguarding the entire transport ecosystem – including vehicles, infrastructure, operations, and maintenance. In addition to traditional functional safety, the project also required system-level safety analysis across the full lifecycle of the TaaS offering, going beyond standard practices to meet the demands of a scalable, automated transport solution.
Carabiner´s contribution
Carabiner provided expert support not only within active projects but across the broader organization. Our expert contributed extensive safety knowledge and experience, helping to develop and implement safety processes aligned with industry standards while adapting them to the unique needs of autonomous and self-driving vehicles. This included contributions to process development, implementation of functional safety standards, and broader safety analyses covering the complete transportation solution.
